High Moss is a magnificent Arts and Crafts era house in Portinscale, near Keswick. Built in 1901 for John Stanwell Birkett by the builder Thomas Hodgson, it is an architectural masterpiece designed by William Henry Ward. Built on the side of a steeply sloping hill the house is packed with interesting features such as the central winding staircase that links all six levels of accommodation.
The private garden is also wonderful – and beautifully cared for by the owners Peter and Christine as well as their gardeners. We were lucky enough to visit in early May and saw masses of daffodils, tulips and bluebells.
